the little macbook that could!!!!

this thing is a macbook pro that used to be my mom's work machine. however, one time she dropped it, and the screen went dark. it was totally busted. the rest of the thing still worked, though, so i figured... server time!

this is the start of the long tale of superlove, as this is where i ultimately hosted the site due to my other servers at the time lacking the power compared to the macbook. now that i have more powerful servers on my hands, i have considered moving the site, but for now, it works.

besides superlove, the humble mac server, sometimes known as katmac3 (my nickname + the server name + the number three for the amount of times i had to reinstall the OS for dumbass reasons), hosts a few other (mainly internal) services, but i try to reserve resources for superlove as it's the site most important for me.

i got this one christmas when i realized i really liked this self-hosting thing. and i have put it through the horrors ever since then. not only does it host both my media servers, plex and jellyfin (the latter is a mirror of the former, for whenever plex finally shits the bed), but kavita & navidrome servers as well, and just a shit ton of miscellaneous stuff.

it was my most powerful server for a while so i kind of put everything on here and i have yet to distribute/balance the service load between all three of my present servers.

the 9020 name comes from the machine model name, as it's a dell optiplex 9020.

the newest server in my arsenal, as of fall 2025.

this came out of a disaster with the previous new server i had, a lenovo thinkstation P520. i accidentally fried the motherboard on that; after some attempted repairs, and lots of burnt money, i decided to start over and save money for a new system. that wound up being the HP Z440 workstation, which became athena.

out of all the servers i've owned, athena is by far the beefiest machine i've ever had. it feels like it can do anything!

so far it doesn't run much, by way of being (relatively) new to my homelab, but i have future plans for it :)
